The Power of Collective Action: Why Becoming a B Corp Still Matters

Published April 15, 2025

Let’s start off by saying we are immensely proud to become a Certified B Corp - when we found out we did a little happy dance. In today's world, where accountability matters (as it should) and where it's too easy to make green claims without real evidence, third-party verification is more important than ever.

At The Future Forest Company, we deeply believe in the power of collective action and rigorous accountability.

That’s why you’ll see us working with a diverse range of businesses at different stages of their impact journey. Those just starting out, those becoming increasingly aware of their impacts - and those we fan-girl over because they truly excel in sustainability. You know who you are! Let's face it: we're facing significant environmental challenges, and no single organisation can solve these alone. But we genuinely believe that collectively, we can. The momentum we build together is powerful.

Collective Action: More Than Just Certification

Becoming a Certified B Corp is about more than a badge; it's about joining a global community dedicated to redefining business success. Founded in 2006, B Lab set high standards for environmental performance, transparency, and accountability to drive positive impact on people and planet.

To be clear – this certification was no walk in the park. It was restarted and paused many times throughout The Future Forest Company’s history, because it was challenging and took time, and for a small organisation, meant we had to truly address some areas within our business that needed work.

"Achieving B Corp status reflects our deep commitment to transparency, sustainability, and ethical business practices. It confirms our dedication to making a genuine positive impact on the environment, our communities, and our employees.

Huge thanks to our fantastic team whose hard work made this achievement possible - we couldn't have done it without you."

Addressing the Criticism: Why Integrity Matters

We openly acknowledge debates surrounding B Corp certification. Critics rightly highlight cases where subsidiaries of larger corporations with questionable sustainability records have become certified, causing valid concerns about credibility.

However, these criticisms underline why integrity and collective accountability matter so deeply. High-profile controversies have sparked necessary debates and prompted B Lab to listen, acknowledge and then strengthen its certification standards, including heightened climate commitments, particularly for larger organisations. We firmly believe that these debates help the entire community improve, and that we must all continually reflect, recognise areas for growth, and take meaningful action.

Collective Responsibility Means Collective Action

The strength of B Corp lies not in perfection, but in shared responsibility. By holding each other accountable, the B Corp community maintains credibility, pushes boundaries, and ensures businesses truly practice what they preach.

For companies like ours, deeply involved in environmental restoration, and who spend months, even years, cultivating trusted partnerships, becoming a B Corp isn't just a certification - it's a promise. It signals to our stakeholders, clients, partners, and communities that our claims are rigorously evaluated and transparently documented.

We also recognise and greatly admire phenomenal grassroots organisations that bring like-minded communities together outside of the B Corp process. Our commitment to working alongside these collectives remains unchanged.

Join the Movement

For us at The Future Forest Company, it marks an ongoing commitment to deeper integrity, greater impact, and a healthier planet.

Together, let’s continue to raise the bar and turn collective action into an unstoppable force for good.
