Peatland Restoration
Peatland restoration and protection is vital in our fight against climate change. Peatlands are wetland ecosystems in which waterlogged conditions prevent plant material from fully decomposing. Consequently, the production of organic matter exceeds its decomposition, which results in a net accumulation of peat. Peatlands cover 3% of the Earths surface but are effective in storing around 33% of the worlds global carbon emissions. The Future Forest Company are carrying out several peatland restoration projects across the UK, to improve biodiversity and lock up carbon. Peatland & Carbon
Peatlands are a vast natural carbon store. Degraded peatlands are releasing carbon back out into the atmosphere 20 times faster than it is being sequestered. All of our projects are registered with the Peatland Code, in order to verify the carbon emissions reductions made.
Restoration & Monitoring
We work alongside organisations such as Yorkshire Peat Partnership and Peatland ACTION in order to achieve the highest standard of restoration and monitoring. Peatland restoration forms one part of our integrated land management approach.
Scale
We work at a landscape scale, maintaining best practice in land management by increasing biodiversity, planting the right tree in the right place and encouraging community access across all our sites.
We work with landowners to facilitate peatland restoration and biodiversity gain on their own properties.
