Mill of Plunton

Mill of Plunton

Our vision is to transform the 90.57Ha of grazed farmland at our Mill of Plunton site into a mosaic of woodland and wildlife-rich wetlands and grasslands, that will capture and store carbon whilst helping to reverse the current biodiversity crisis. We aim to achieve this by working with traditional farming methods and the local community.

Afforestation

Over 180,000 trees will be planted on our Mill of Plunton site. Around 55 ha of woodland will be created, around 3/4 of the proposed planting plan consists of native broadleaved woodland, significantly exceeding the requirements of the UK Forestry Standard. Explore our planting plan on the interactive map below.

The Future Forest Company- Mill of Plunton-

Wildflower-rich Wetlands and Grassland

Through our field surveys, we know that Mill of Plunton supports a wide variety of special places and species. We will enhance at least 10ha of land for biodiversity, including wetlands and grasslands at Mill of Plunton, turning it into a biodiversity hotspot. We will use traditional farming techniques to manage these areas, using low intensity cattle grazing and hay cuts.

Great Crested Newt-The Future Forest Company

Pond Enhancement

Both Great Crested Newts and Otters are found at Mill of Plunton; both are European protected species. The Great Crested Newt has been confirmed, via eDNA analysis and previous surveys, as present in at least one pond at Mill of Plunton. This newt is rare in Scotland and and across Europe. We will enhance and manage our ponds and surrounding land to help increase their populations. This pond work and the enhancement of our wetlands will also be beneficial for our local otters at Mill of Plunton.
