This World Wetlands Day on, join us in protecting wetlands for our common future!
Why do we need wetlands?
Wetlands are amazing ecosystems; they support 40% of all known plant and animal species. This includes many endangered, threatened and endemic species that can only survive in certain wetland habitats and nowhere else.
Almost all amphibians, half of fishes and over one-third of vertebrates make their homes in freshwater wetlands. Wetlands act as a connecting ecosystem between habitats, facilitating the movement of species, which is vital for maintaining genetic diversity and healthy populations.
Healthy wetlands also store vast amounts of carbon, helping in the battle against climate change. They also work as water purification sources, help reduce the risk of serious flooding, and play a key role in the supply of clean and plentiful water.
Why are wetlands in trouble?
Wetlands are being destroyed or degraded at an alarming rate, almost three times faster than forests, according to The State of Global Wetlands Report. The report identified wetlands as the most threatened ecosystem, impacting the 40% of all plant and animal species which live or breed in them.
Because they are often hydrologically connected to agricultural, industrial and urban areas, wetlands are vulnerable to pollution which threatens their biodiversity – even when the pollution source is at a distance. Invasive alien species are also a problem for wetlands, as they often outcompete native biodiversity, contributing to further biodiversity loss.
Although wetlands are highly effective at storing carbon when in a healthy state – absorbing twice as much carbon as forests – they can actually be sources of carbon dioxide and methane when degraded.
How we care for our wetlands
At The Future Forest Company, we manage several sites with wetlands that were degraded when we acquired them. This includes peatlands, marshes, flushes and ponds. We have been restoring these areas as fast as possible with the help of business sponsorship, by conserving the best places, regenerating other areas, and where appropriate creating new wetlands.
